Southern rock went global in the 90s with the help of bands like Hootie & the Blowfish. Unlike others who went on to focus on jam rock, the South Carolina band became the representative of college rock in the mainstream. The band's music is known for being a love letter to the classic college rock tunes, wherein the band's members grew up listening to. The ever-changing landscape of the rock music scene has brought forth variations of styles and approaches. The college rock scene heard today is quite different from two decades before. Many consider Hootie & the Blowfish as the only surviving classic college rock band existing today. Due to this reason, their current run is treasured and celebrated by many listeners.
Hootie & the Blowfish was conceived at the University of South Carolina when Darius Rucker and Mark Bryan became acquainted. After Dean Felber and Brantley Smith joined them, they began calling themselves Hootie & the Blowfish 1986. This band name came from nicknames they've got from college friends. After they graduated, Smith left the group, and he was replaced by Jim Sonefeld.
The band's journey towards success was a hard one. Their sound is very different from the grunge rock that was popular at the time. Nonetheless, they were discovered by producer/journalist Tim Sommer in 1993. Sommer signed them to Atlantic Records that same year.
In 1994, the band debuted "Cracked Rear View." It was released expecting that it would not be that big of a release due to the difference in their sound. However, the mainstream picked it up and became a huge hit in 1995. This record became the best-selling album of the year. "Hold My Hand," and "Only Wanna Be With You" are the most successful in its track. "Fairweather Johnson" came after followed suit and fought against the first album in chart-standing. Both albums topped the Billboard 200. "Musical Chairs" then came out in 1998 and settled on a top 4 placement in the same chart. A self-titled album came out in 2003, which was followed by 'Looking For Lucky in 2005. The band went on a hiatus right after. They came back in 2019 with "Imperfect Circle."
